American Toastie

My grandma made this and called it an “Amerikaanse Tosti” or an American Toastie. It is not American at all, especially since one of the ingredients can pretty much only be found in The Netherlands: Filet Americain. It is a steak tartare but with spices in it.
You can substitute steak tartare for the Filet Americain, and add some salt, pepper, mayonnaise, worchestersauce and paprika powder. Other spices that go in to make a traditional Filet Americain as you get it in The Netherlands are onion, corianderseed, nutmeg, chili, mace, curcuma and celery spice.
If you don’t have a panini press, you can use a different kind of toaster as well, but you might want to change the type of bread as the Italian Roll is quite large and probably won’t fit.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Italian roll
  • 1 egg
  • Filet Americain
  • 1 tsp mayonnaise
  • salt/pepper

Serves 1

Recipe:

Either boil the egg and cut into slices, or bake the egg in a frying pan until the egg white has fully set.
Heat the panini press.

Slice the roll horizontally in half. Lather one half with a layer of Filet Americain. Spread a teaspoon of mayonnaise on the other half. Place the egg on the Filet Americain and place the mayonnaise half on top.

Bake for 3 minutes in a panini press or until hot and crispy.
