These breakfast jars I made as gifts, but they are also handy to have around for when you want something quick but hot. This is not an overly sweet porridge, if you want to you can add extra sugar to taste, but I feel like you get used to low-sugar quicker than you’d expect.
Ingredients:
For the jar:
- 100gr porridge oats
- pinch of salt
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1.5 tbs cacao nibs
- 75gr dried dates, pitted
- 75gr dried figs
- 2 tsp fine sugar
Add to the jar contents:
- 600ml milk
Serves 2
Recipe:
Cut the dates and figs each into 8 pieces. Toss these with the sugar in order to seal the cuts.
To make the jar:
Layer the contents, with the fine ingredients – the oats, salt and cinnamon – in the bottom and the coarser ingredients – cacao nibs and the sugared figs and dates – on top. This fills a 500ml jar. Whenever making jars for gifts, pick a jar that would pack the ingredients in tightly, as this will allow the layers to be visible best, and allows the least chance for accidental mixing of the layers.
Add a label to the jar which specifies:
Add youself: 600ml milk
Instructions: Place the contents of the jar in a sauce pan. Add 600ml milk. Heat while stirring constantly. Simmer for 3 minutes.
